History of Australia Wallabies Rugby Team

The Australian national rugby union team is nicknamed the Wallabies in reference to the wallaby—a marsupial that is extensively distributed throughout Australia. They play in Australia’s traditional sporting colors of green and gold. This team played their first international against British Isles on 24 June 1899 and won by 13 – 3. They are currently ranked third position in the IRB World Rankings. Ewen James Andrew McKenzie is professional coach of the Australian Rugby Team. This 48 years old coach is a former Australian Rugby union prop and formerly coached the Super Rugby franchises Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs as well as the French club Stade Français. Ben Mowen, aged 29 is the captain of the Australia national rugby union team. On 31 October 2013, he replaced James Horwill as captain but as his contract he will leave Australia at the end of the 2014 Super Rugby season.

Tournaments played by Australia Rugby Team

The Australia Rugby Team regularly participates in the Rugby Championship with Argentina, New Zealand, as well as South Africa per year. This was Australia’s only annual tournament which is formerly known as Tri Nations. The Wallabies have won the Tri Nations competition 3 times in 16 years; in 2000, 2001 and 2011. They also contest the Bledisloe Cup with New Zealand and the Mandela Challenge Plate with South Africa. The All Blacks (New Zealand) are considered to be their greatest rivals of Australia. Australia also have took part in all seven Rugby World Cups. They have won the World Cup on two occasions, in 1991 against England, and in 1999 against France. But unluckily in the 2003 competition they lost in the final after extra time to England.
